Moving House for Christmas "To Do" List

With only a few days to go until Christmas, the countdown is on - especially if you are planning on moving house in time for Father Christmas to visit you at your new home.

Moving house at any time of the year can be stressful and the pressure of being moved in and unpacked by the 24th December can exacerbate this - however, if you follow our 'Christmas To Do List' you will be settled in and enjoying the festive spirit in no time at all.

Plan Ahead.
As soon as you know you are moving house, book a free home moving survey, from a professional removals and storage company. You will then be able to discuss any concerns that you may have about moving, sort our secure storage if you require it and get an idea of what the actual move will cost. You can always confirm the moving date later on.

Declutter
3-4 weeks before you move, start sorting out the attic, garage and shed. Discard or recycle anything that is no longer of any use. Bishop's Move works with Cancer Research UK and will collect any unwanted items that you may and donate the direct to local charities to sell in their shops.

And remember to keep any Christmas decorations you find to one side you can find them easily at your new home.

Inform Utility Companies
1-2 weeks before moving make sure that you read your meters and inform your utility companies of your move. Also remember to notify your doctor and dentist if you are moving out of their patient area. Some of these services may have reduced operating hours around Christmas.

Fixtures & Fittings
2-3 weeks before the big day, start taking down any of the fixtures and fittings that you are taking with you. We can arrange for a handyman to dismantle furniture if you prefer.

Packing
If you are packing yourself, it is best to start as early as possible, and to pack just a few things at a time - starting with the least essential items and working your way through the house. Clothes can be kept in drawers, and items from your wardrobe will be transported in our specialised wardrobe cartons. Hit the rest of the packing during the week before you move.

24 Hours to Go
The night before, make sure that you empty the fridge and freezer and set aside any essentials that you do not want packed in the van - this should include personal documentation, such as passports, birth certificates and other valuables.

Christmas Shopping
Make sure that any online orders you have purchased will be delivered to the right address. Pack Christmas presents together and make sure the removals crew pack them last on to the van, so that you can retrieve them and put them in a safe place on arrival at your new home. Any items of significant value should be kept with you at all times.

And rest assured, whilst we might not have a team of reindeer and elves to assist us, we have a new fleet of vehicles and friendly staff who will do all they can to make your Christmas in your new home a special one.
