Our Guide to Post Redirection – What to Do and What's the Cost?
Moving house can be a really stressful time and there are plenty of things that you will need to take into account and pay for.

It might seem like there are an endless amount of tasks that you need to undertake when moving but something that you might not have considered is post redirection.

This is important as if you don’t bother to redirect all of your old post then there could be sensitive documents or post going to your old address. This could potentially leave you vulnerable to fraud or having your identity stolen which is a risk you might not want to take. If you are unsure about what you need to do when redirecting your post, then we have put together a guide that should be able to help.

Changing Address Checklist

The first thing that you should do when moving home is to make sure you have notified all of the relevant companies and people that might send you sensitive information. This includes both people that might post sensitive information to you and anywhere such as banks, that might be sending account information. Many people are unsure of exactly who they should notify as you will no doubt receive letters and information for all kinds of businesses. We have put together a brief list of the people you should notify including;

  • Family members and friends
  • Your employer
  • Current account and savings account
  • Car insurances and DVLA
  • Student loans company
  • Pension provider

If you have left this until the last minute, then you might not have time to notify all of these people in time. In this case then you might need to think about a Royal Mail redirection to ensure that you are still receiving sensitive materials.

Royal Mail Redirect

You can redirect all of your personal mail from one address to another by using the Royal Mail Redirection service. This means that all of your post will be forwarded for either three, six or twelve months after you move out. Even if you have notified companies about your change of address, this can still be a good idea in case you have forgotten to notify anyone. It will take five days for this service to be set up but you can apply online up to three months before you move. You can still put this in place up to six months after you move out too. The price of this service is charged per surname and varies as follows;

  • 3 Months - £31.99
  • 6 Months - £41.99
  • 12 Months - £59.99

Free Change of Address Service

Another service that you should consider when moving house is using the free change of address service online, known as iammoving.com. This is the largest online moving service that updates companies on your behalf to save you the hassle of getting in touch with every company that has your details. You should still notify the most important people and companies yourself, such as your bank, but this free service is a great way to fill in the gaps. A number of major companies subscribe to this service including the DVLA, Boots and The AA.

Conclusion

You should consider a mix of these different removal services to make sure that you are still receiving all of your post and protect any sensitive information. Although it might seem like an extra chore, it can also make sure that you don’t miss any payments and end up owing money through no fault of your own.
